The Whole World And You is a song by Andrew Horowitz.

The music video for The Whole World And You debuted in the 8th episode of Tally Hall's Internet Show

History

The Whole World and You was written in under an hour[1] for Andrew's toy instrumental themed band Toy Orchestra, before being used as a Tally Hall song.[2][3]

Song Interpretations

Some fans have interpreted the lyrics to be sarcastic, such as One Week // One Band who says that the lyrics "tell a tale of sarcastic selflessness"[4] However, in an interview with Suzanne Chessler, Andrew stated "Some of our songs allow lots of room for interpretation, but my song 'The Whole World And You' is just a fun number with no deeper purpose."[5]

Music Video

The music video for The Whole World And You was made by Frankenstudio, a production company run by Ken Berman and Frankie Cordero, and it was made using multiple wooden-looking puppets[6]. It focuses on a electoral candidate and their election campaign, which sadly ends in a assassination attempt.[7]

The video was used in Tally Hall's Internet Show, and was later shown at Brooklyn Academy of Music's Live Action Puppets Shorts Program B in 2011.[7]

Trivia

  • The word "sotries" was originally intended to be "stories" but there was a typo when the lyrics were printed out. Andrew decided to keep the typo and sing it as written.[8]
  • In 2021 Needlejuice Records reissued Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum; as part of the quality control phase the word was auto-corrected back to "Stories" on the CD and vinyl lyric sheets. The error was fixed in the 2022 reprint.
  • There is a short rendition of the song done in an alternative punk style present on the Admittedly Incomplete Demos album, as well as appearing twice in live performances.

Lyrics

There's lots of pretty people here
Sharing sotries and passing letters and
There's lots of questions answered
And metaphysical astronomical songs
Words printed all on papers that
Seem too mystical it's so magical
People that dance and compute that
No one's better than you

There's kings in distant cities
Who rule their persons and make them happy and
We won't forget about all the servisory congratulatory
Even the animals know that
Something's brewing and they're all cooing
'Cause in the end I'd like to say
No one's better than you

I hope you're happy now that I've revealed the truth
I've even written this whole song about you
And not about me
And not about me...

Please don't just laugh and clap right now
This is serious I'm not delirious
I've waited very patiently just to let you know
Who should run this show
'Cause we all know these are the facts
Nothing to retract nothing too abstract
Concluding in this song I'll say
No one's better than you
No one's better than you
No one's better than you
