The song references Marcel Proust's novel "In Search of Lost Time".  In the novel's second volume, the Narrator becomes enamoured with a "little band" of teenage girls as they stroll by the sea.
At one time, there was some question as to how the song received the title "Hidden In The Sand" since it's called  [Untitled Track] in iTunes, not listed in the track listing of the CD insert, and those words are not a part of the lyrics, either.  However, in the liner notes of the Complete Demos, after the lyrics of all the songs, you'll see: "(Hidden In The Sand)".
